How to Treat Crepey Skin on the Neck, Chest and Arms

By Jacqueline Nash, RN

You take care of your face. You have a routine. Maybe you've even done some professional treatments. But then you look down at your neck... your chest... your arms... and see that thin, papery, crinkled texture that seems to have appeared overnight.

Crepey skin. It's one of the most frustrating signs of aging because it's so visible and so hard to hide.

Here's what causes it and what actually helps.

What Crepey Skin Actually Is

Crepey skin is thin, fragile skin with a texture like crepe paper ... fine wrinkles, loose draping, and a lack of firmness. It's different from regular wrinkles:

Wrinkles are lines and folds, often from repeated muscle movement.

Crepey skin is a texture change across an area ... the skin itself has lost its thickness and elasticity.

The underlying cause is loss of collagen and elastin. Your skin literally doesn't have the structural proteins it needs to stay firm and bouncy.

Why Neck, Chest, and Arms Are Worst

These areas develop crepey skin faster than the face for several reasons:

Less attention: Most people apply sunscreen to their face but neglect neck, chest, and arms. Decades of unprotected sun exposure accelerates collagen breakdown.

Thinner skin: The skin on your neck and chest is naturally thinner than facial skin, with fewer oil glands.

Movement: Your neck moves constantly. Your arms stretch and fold. This repetitive motion stresses already-fragile skin.

Gravity: These areas don't have the same structural support as the face. Gravity has more to work with.

Hormonal changes: Menopause accelerates collagen loss everywhere, but it's most visible where skin was already vulnerable.

Treating Crepey Neck Skin

The neck is tricky because the skin is thin and the underlying structure (platysma muscle) can create banding. Treatment approaches:

Tixel: Thermal collagen induction that's gentle enough for delicate neck skin. One of the best options for improving crepey texture without aggressive downtime.

Microneedling: Stimulates collagen at controlled depths. Usually needs a series of 4-6 treatments for the neck.

HIFU: For necks that have both crepey texture AND laxity (loose/sagging). Addresses the deeper tissue as well as surface texture.

What to avoid: Aggressive laser treatments on the neck can cause scarring or prolonged discoloration. The neck heals differently than the face.

Treating Chest Crepiness (Décolletage)

The chest shows sun damage and aging more dramatically than almost anywhere else. Those vertical lines between the breasts ("sleep lines") plus overall crepiness are extremely common.

Best approaches:

IPL/Photofacial: Addresses the sun damage (brown spots, redness) that usually accompanies chest crepiness.

Microneedling: Builds collagen to improve texture. The chest responds well to microneedling but needs multiple sessions.

Tixel: Gentle enough for the chest, effective for texture improvement.

Combination: Often the best results come from treating sun damage (IPL) AND building collagen (microneedling or Tixel) together.

Treating Crepey Arms

Upper arm crepiness ... that loose, wrinkled skin that shows when you wave ... is surprisingly common after 50. It's often accompanied by some skin laxity (loose skin).

Treatment options:

Microneedling with growth factors: Stimulates collagen production in the arm skin. Usually needs 4-6 sessions.

HIFU: Can help with both the crepey texture and the loose skin component. Good for arms that have laxity in addition to texture issues.

RF (Radiofrequency): Gentle heating to stimulate collagen. May require more sessions than other options.

Reality check: Arms are harder to treat than the face because the skin is different (fewer oil glands, different healing response). Expect improvement, not perfection.

Treatments That Help Crepey Skin

Across all these areas, the goal is the same: stimulate your body to produce new collagen in skin that has become thin and depleted.

Most effective:

  • Tixel: Gentle thermal treatment, good for delicate areas
  • Microneedling: Versatile, can be done on any body area
  • HIFU: When laxity accompanies crepiness
  • IPL/Laser: When sun damage is a major component

Number of treatments: Body areas typically need more sessions than facial treatments ... plan for 4-6 treatments minimum, sometimes more.

At-Home Care for Crepey Skin

Professional treatments work better when supported by good home care:

Sunscreen: Daily SPF 30+ on neck, chest, arms. This is non-negotiable. Sun damage is a major cause of crepey skin ... stop making it worse.

Retinol: Builds collagen over time. Start with a low percentage and work up. Be gentle on the neck and chest ... they're more sensitive than the face.

Hydration: Crepey skin looks worse when dehydrated. Use a good moisturizer with hyaluronic acid.

Vitamin C: Supports collagen production and provides antioxidant protection.

What doesn't help: "Firming" creams that claim instant results. No topical can tighten loose, thin skin ... only stimulating new collagen from within can do that.
