Why it's hard to treat
The fungus lives under the nail.
Nail fungus (onychomycosis) isn't on the surface... it's underneath the nail, in the nail bed. That's why topical treatments rarely work. They can't penetrate deeply enough to reach the infection.
Oral antifungal medications (like terbinafine) can work, but they require months of daily pills and carry risks of liver toxicity. Not everyone can or wants to take them.
Laser treatment offers a third option: targeting the fungus through the nail without systemic medication.
How laser treatment works
Light that kills fungus. Without harming you.
Laser light passes through the nail and heats the fungal organisms underneath. The fungus is killed by the heat while surrounding tissue remains unharmed.
What happens during treatment:
- Nails are cleaned and prepped
- Laser is applied to each affected nail
- You'll feel warmth and occasional pinprick sensation
- Treatment takes 20-30 minutes for all toes
- No anesthesia needed
After treatment: You can walk out and resume normal activities. The fungus is dead, but you won't see visible improvement immediately... you have to wait for new, clear nail to grow in.
Timeline
Patience required. Results are worth it.
This is important to understand: toenails grow slowly... about 1mm per month. Even though the fungus is killed immediately, it takes 9-12 months for the clear nail to fully grow out and replace the damaged nail.
What you'll see:
- Immediately: No visible change
- 2-3 months: New clear nail emerging at base
- 6 months: Clear nail growing out, infected portion at tips
- 9-12 months: Full clear nail grown in
You'll need to trim away the old infected nail as the new nail grows in. We'll give you instructions on proper nail care during this period.
Prevention
Keep them clear. Once they're clear.
Nail fungus can return if you're re-exposed. After treatment, protect your results:
- Keep feet dry... fungi love moisture
- Wear moisture-wicking socks
- Rotate shoes and let them dry completely
- Wear shower shoes in gyms and pools
- Disinfect nail clippers and files
- Consider antifungal powder in shoes
