What Is Pico Laser Technology?

"Pico" refers to picosecond ... one trillionth of a second. Pico lasers deliver energy in these ultra-short pulses, compared to nanosecond (billionth of a second) pulses from older Q-switched lasers.

Why does pulse duration matter? Shorter pulses create a photomechanical effect rather than a primarily photothermal (heat-based) effect. This shatters ink particles more efficiently with less heat damage to surrounding tissue.

The result: faster clearance, fewer sessions, and less scarring risk.

How Pico Lasers Remove Tattoo Ink

Tattoo ink sits in the dermis ... the deeper layer of your skin. Your body's immune system constantly tries to remove it, which is why tattoos fade slightly over time. But the particles are too large for your immune cells to eliminate completely.

What the pico laser does:

1. Ultra-short laser pulses target the ink pigment
2. The energy shatters ink particles into tiny fragments
3. Your immune system (macrophages) can now engulf the smaller particles
4. The particles are carried away through your lymphatic system
5. The tattoo gradually fades over weeks as this process continues

Each treatment shatters more ink. Session after session, the tattoo becomes lighter until it's gone (or light enough for a cover-up).

Pico vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Q-switched lasers have been the standard for tattoo removal for decades. They work ... but pico technology represents a significant advancement:

Pico laser advantages:

• Less heat = less scarring risk
• Effective on previously treated tattoos that plateaued
• Less post-treatment blistering

• Q-switched: 10-20+ sessions typical

What to Expect During Treatment

Before: Avoid sun exposure on the tattoo for 4-6 weeks before treatment. Tanned skin increases complication risk. We'll photograph the tattoo to track progress.

During: Treatment takes 5-30 minutes depending on tattoo size. You'll wear protective eyewear. The laser pulses feel like rubber bands snapping against your skin ... uncomfortable but tolerable. We can apply numbing cream for sensitive areas or larger pieces.

After: The treated area will look frosted white immediately (the "popcorn effect" of ink shattering). This fades within 20 minutes. Expect redness, swelling, and possibly blistering for a few days. The tattoo will look darker at first as shattered ink rises, then progressively fades.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Session count depends on multiple factors:

Factors that mean fewer sessions:

• Black ink (easiest to remove)
• Amateur tattoos (less ink, shallower)
• Older tattoos (already partially faded)
• Good immune system
• Location with good blood flow (torso vs. feet)

Factors that mean more sessions:

• Colorful tattoos (especially blues, greens, yellows)
• Professional tattoos (more ink, deeper placement)
• Cover-up tattoos (multiple ink layers)
• Tattoos on extremities (hands, feet, ankles)
• Dense, saturated coloring

Average ranges:

• Simple black amateur tattoo: 4-6 sessions
• Black professional tattoo: 6-10 sessions
• Colorful professional tattoo: 8-15 sessions
• Cover-up or heavily layered: 10-15+ sessions

Sessions are spaced 6-8 weeks apart to allow healing and immune clearance.

Which Ink Colors Respond Best?

Easiest to remove:

First 2 weeks:

• No swimming, hot tubs, or soaking
• Avoid sun exposure (cover with clothing or bandage)
• Don't pick at scabs or peeling skin
• Keep moisturized

Between sessions:

• Protect from sun (sunscreen + coverage)
• Stay hydrated and healthy (supports immune clearance)
• Don't smoke (impairs healing and clearance)
