Microneedling is one of those treatments that sounds scary but delivers real results. You're essentially poking thousands of tiny holes in your face. On purpose. And paying someone to do it.
So why would anyone sign up for this?
Because it works. Microneedling ... also called collagen induction therapy ... is one of the most effective treatments we have for improving skin texture, reducing scars, and building collagen. It's been around for decades, it's backed by solid research, and it works on almost every skin type.
Here's what you need to know before booking.
How Microneedling Works
The concept is simple: create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, and your body responds by healing itself with fresh collagen and elastin.
A microneedling device uses fine needles (typically 0.5mm to 2.5mm) to puncture the top layer of skin. These aren't random pokes ... we're creating thousands of tiny channels in a precise pattern.
What happens next is the magic:
- Inflammation phase (Day 1-3): Your body recognizes the micro-injuries and sends blood flow, growth factors, and healing cells to the area.
- Proliferation phase (Day 3-14): New collagen and elastin fibers begin forming. The channels close.
- Remodeling phase (Week 2 - Month 6): The new collagen matures and organizes. Skin continues improving for months.
The result? Thicker, firmer skin with better texture. And because you're triggering your body's own repair mechanisms, the improvements are natural and long-lasting.
What Microneedling Actually Treats
Microneedling isn't a one-trick treatment. It addresses multiple concerns at once:
Acne scars: This is where microneedling really shines. The collagen remodeling helps fill in pitted and rolling scars. Multiple sessions can significantly improve acne scarring that other treatments struggle to address.
Fine lines and wrinkles: New collagen plumps the skin from within, softening lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.
Large pores: As collagen builds around pore walls, pores appear smaller and tighter.
Uneven texture: Rough, bumpy skin smooths out as old damaged tissue is replaced with fresh cells.
Stretch marks: Yes, we can microneedle the body too. Stretch marks respond well to collagen induction therapy.
Hyperpigmentation: When combined with the right serums, microneedling can help fade dark spots and even out skin tone.
Professional Microneedling vs. At-Home Dermarollers
Let's address the elephant in the room: those $20 dermarollers on Amazon.
Here's the difference:
At-home dermarollers:
- Needles are typically 0.25mm or less
- Can't penetrate deep enough to stimulate real collagen production
- May help with product absorption
- Risk of infection if not properly sanitized
- Needles dull quickly and can cause micro-tears instead of clean punctures
Professional microneedling:
- Needle depth is adjustable (0.5mm to 2.5mm)
- Reaches the dermis where collagen is actually produced
- Sterile, single-use needle cartridges
- Precise, motorized punctures (not dragging)
- Can be combined with PRP, growth factors, or other boosters
The at-home version is like using a butter knife when you need a scalpel. It might do something, but it won't deliver the results you're after.
What to Expect During Treatment
A typical microneedling session at our Boardman office takes about 60-90 minutes, including prep:
Step 1: Cleanse and numb (30-45 minutes)
We apply a topical numbing cream and let it sit. This is the key to a comfortable treatment.
Step 2: Microneedling (15-30 minutes)
The device passes over each area of your face in multiple directions. You'll feel pressure and a vibrating sensation, but the numbing cream takes care of most discomfort.
Step 3: Serum application
While the channels are still open, we apply growth factors, hyaluronic acid, or PRP (if you opted for it). This is when those ingredients can actually penetrate deep into the skin.
Step 4: Soothing mask
A calming mask helps reduce immediate redness and inflammation.
You'll leave looking like you have a sunburn. This is normal.
Downtime and Recovery
Microneedling has less downtime than lasers, but it's not a lunch-break treatment. Here's what to expect:
Day 1: Red, warm, tight skin. Like a moderate sunburn. Some pinpoint bleeding during treatment is normal and resolves quickly.
Days 2-3: Redness fades to pink. Skin may feel dry or rough. Some people experience minor swelling.
Days 4-7: Light peeling or flaking as the micro-channels heal. Don't pick at it.
Week 2+: Skin looks normal but continues improving underneath as new collagen forms.
Post-treatment rules:
- No makeup for 24 hours
- No active ingredients (retinol, acids, vitamin C) for 3-5 days
- Gentle cleanser and hydrating moisturizer only
- SPF 30+ is mandatory ... your fresh skin is vulnerable to sun damage
- No sweating, swimming, or saunas for 48-72 hours
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
One session can make a difference, but microneedling works best as a series.
For general skin rejuvenation: 3-4 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart
For acne scars: 4-6 sessions minimum, sometimes more for deep scarring
For anti-aging maintenance: 2-4 sessions per year
You'll see some improvement after your first treatment, but the real magic happens around session 3-4 when the cumulative collagen production kicks in.
Who Shouldn't Get Microneedling
Microneedling is safe for most skin types and tones ... that's one of its biggest advantages over lasers. But it's not for everyone:
- Active acne or skin infections: We don't want to spread bacteria across your face
- Active cold sores: Can trigger an outbreak (we can prescribe antivirals if you're prone)
- Blood clotting disorders or blood thinners: Increased bleeding risk
- Pregnancy: Not enough safety data
- Recent Accutane use: Wait at least 6 months
- Keloid scarring history: May trigger abnormal scarring
- Active eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea: In the treatment area
If you're unsure whether microneedling is right for you, that's exactly what consultations are for.
