Is a Medspa Membership Really Worth It? (Not All Memberships Are Created Equal)
By Jacqueline Nash, RN
You've seen the signs. "Join our membership program!" Every medspa has one now.
And you're wondering: Is this actually a good deal, or is it just a way to lock me into spending money every month?
It's a fair question. And the honest answer is… it depends.
Because not all medspa memberships are created equal. Some are genuinely valuable. Others are just a discount dressed up as a "program."
Let me show you what to look for — and what to avoid.
The "Discount-Only" Membership Trap
Here's what most medspa memberships look like:
Pay $99/month. Get 10% off treatments.
That's it. That's the whole thing.
You're essentially prepaying for a discount. Which means you're committed to spending money every month whether you need anything or not. And that 10%? You could probably negotiate that anyway if you asked.
These memberships benefit the medspa (guaranteed monthly revenue) more than they benefit you.
Before you sign up for any membership, ask yourself:
What am I actually GETTING — not just saving?
What a Real Membership Should Include
A membership that's actually worth your money should feel like you're getting more — not just paying less.
Here's what separates a valuable membership from a glorified discount card:
1. Treatments included — not just discounted
The best memberships include actual services in your monthly fee. Not "20% off if you book." Actual treatments you can use.
At our practice, every membership tier includes monthly treatments. Our entry-level members get a HydraFacial every single month. Higher tiers include things like microneedling, chemical peels, and LED therapy — built into the membership, not added on.
You're not paying for the privilege of getting a discount. You're paying for treatments you'll actually receive.
2. Rollover or banking options
Life happens. You get busy. You travel. You're sick.
A good membership doesn't punish you for missing a month. Look for programs that let you bank treatments or roll over credits. You paid for it — you should be able to use it.
3. Meaningful perks beyond the core treatments
Discounts on additional services and products should be part of the package, not the whole package.
Our members get:
- Percentage off all additional treatments
- Discounts on skincare products
- Priority booking
- Exclusive member-only pricing on new treatments
- Access to member events
These perks add up. But they're bonuses on top of real value — not the value itself.
4. Flexibility to upgrade or adjust
Your skin's needs change. Your budget might change. A good membership program lets you move between tiers without penalty.
Locked into a 12-month contract with no flexibility? That's a red flag.
5. Expert guidance on what YOU actually need
This is the one nobody talks about, but it might be the most important.
When you're a member somewhere, you should have someone who knows your skin, tracks your progress, and helps you make smart decisions about treatments.
Not someone who's just trying to sell you the most expensive thing on the menu. Someone who says "actually, you don't need that right now" when it's true.
Membership should feel like having a skincare partner — not just a transaction.
The Math: When Membership Makes Sense
Let's do some real numbers.
Say you're someone who wants:
- Monthly facials (HydraFacial, $199 regular price)
- Occasional microneedling (3-4x per year, $350 each)
- Skincare products throughout the year (~$500)
Without membership:
- 12 HydraFacials: $2,388
- 4 Microneedling sessions: $1,400
- Skincare: $500
- Total: $4,288/year
With a mid-tier membership (example — actual prices vary):
- Monthly fee includes HydraFacial + quarterly microneedling
- 15% off additional treatments and products
- Total: Significantly less
The savings are real — but only if you were going to do these treatments anyway.
Membership makes sense if:
- You're committed to consistent skincare treatments
- You know you'll use what's included
- The included treatments align with what you actually need
Membership doesn't make sense if:
- You only want treatments once or twice a year
- You're not sure what you need yet
- You're signing up just because it "seems like a good deal"
Red Flags to Watch For
Before you commit to any medspa membership, watch out for:
❌ Long contracts with no exit option
Life changes. You should be able to cancel with reasonable notice.
❌ Vague benefits
"Members get special pricing!" Okay, what pricing? On what? If they can't give you specifics, that's a problem.
❌ Pressure to sign up immediately
"This offer is only good today!" Real value doesn't need high-pressure tactics.
❌ No included treatments — just discounts
A discount is only valuable if you were going to buy anyway. And you can often get discounts without a monthly commitment.
❌ One-size-fits-all tiers
Your skin is unique. Your membership options should have some flexibility.
Questions to Ask Before Joining
Walk into any medspa membership conversation armed with these questions:
- What treatments are INCLUDED (not discounted) each month?
- What happens if I can't use my treatment one month?
- What's the cancellation policy?
- Can I change tiers if my needs change?
- What additional discounts do members receive?
- Is there a contract or commitment period?
- What makes your membership different from just buying a package?
If they can't answer these clearly, keep looking.
Why We Built Our Membership the Way We Did
I'm going to be transparent with you.
When I designed our membership program, I thought about what would have made ME sign up as a client. What would have felt like genuine value — not a gimmick.
I wanted members to:
- Get real treatments every month, not just discounts
- Feel like they're part of something, not just customers
- Have flexibility when life gets complicated
- Save real money compared to à la carte pricing
- Have someone who actually knows their skin and their goals
That's what we built.
Is it for everyone? No. If you only want to come in once a year for a special occasion, membership doesn't make sense for you.
But if you're serious about your skin — if you want consistent care, expert guidance, and yes, real savings — a well-designed membership is one of the smartest investments you can make.
Just make sure you're joining one that's designed for YOUR benefit, not just the medspa's bottom line.
The Bottom Line
A medspa membership can be an incredible value or a waste of money. The difference is in the details.
Look for included treatments, not just discounts. Look for flexibility, not rigid contracts. Look for a practice that treats you like a partner in your skincare journey, not just a recurring charge.
Not all memberships are created equal. Know what you're getting for your money.
