How to Maintain Your Results After Medspa Treatments
By Jacqueline Nash, Medical Aesthetics Nurse, Youngstown, Ohio
You invested in treatments. You saw results. Your skin looks better than it has in years.
Now what?
The truth is that medspa treatments are not one-and-done. Your body keeps aging. Collagen keeps breaking down. Filler metabolizes. Botox wears off.
But with the right maintenance approach, you can make your results last longer and build on them over time rather than starting from scratch every year.
Why Results Are Not Permanent
Understanding why results fade helps you understand how to maintain them.
Collagen treatments (microneedling, HIFU, laser): These stimulate your body to produce new collagen. But your body also continues to break down collagen every day. The net effect is positive for a while, then gradually returns to baseline as breakdown catches up.
Fillers: Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually metabolized by your body over 6-24 months depending on the product and location. It does not disappear suddenly but slowly diminishes.
Neurotoxin (Botox): The effect on muscles wears off as your body produces new receptors. This happens over 3-4 months for most people.
Pigment treatments (IPL, peels): These treat existing damage, but sun exposure continues to create new damage. Without protection and maintenance, spots return.
Nothing about aging stops because you had a treatment. Maintenance is about staying ahead of the curve rather than constantly catching up.
Sunscreen Is Not Optional
If you only do one thing to maintain your results, make it sunscreen.
UV exposure breaks down collagen, causes hyperpigmentation, and accelerates every aspect of skin aging. One day of unprotected sun exposure can undo weeks of progress from collagen-building treatments.
After IPL or any pigment treatment, sun exposure will bring spots back faster than they would naturally develop. After any treatment, sun exposure accelerates the aging you are trying to address.
What to use: SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum (blocks UVA and UVB). Apply every morning regardless of weather. Reapply if you are outside for extended periods.
What matters: Consistency. An SPF 30 you wear every day beats an SPF 50 you forget half the time.
This is not about avoiding the sun entirely. It is about protecting your investment every day.
The Retinoid Foundation
Prescription retinoids (tretinoin) or over-the-counter retinol are the foundation of maintenance skincare.
Retinoids stimulate collagen production, increase cell turnover, and improve skin texture continuously. They extend and enhance results from in-office treatments.
After microneedling or HIFU: Retinoids support and extend the collagen production those treatments stimulated.
After IPL or peels: Retinoids help prevent new pigmentation and maintain clarity.
After any treatment: Retinoids keep skin quality improving between appointments.
How to use: Start slowly (2-3 times per week) and build to nightly use as tolerated. Apply to clean, dry skin. Follow with moisturizer if needed. Always use sunscreen the next day.
If you do not already use a retinoid, ask your provider for a recommendation. It is the single most effective at-home product for maintaining and improving results.
Supporting Players
Beyond sunscreen and retinoid, these products support your results:
Vitamin C serum (morning): Antioxidant protection from environmental damage. Supports collagen production. Brightens skin over time. Use before sunscreen.
Good moisturizer: Keeps skin barrier healthy, which helps skin recover from treatments and maintain hydration. Does not need to be expensive.
Eye cream (optional): The eye area may benefit from dedicated product if you have specific concerns there. Not essential for everyone.
What you do not need: Ten different serums. A complete "routine" with dozens of products. Keep it simple. Sunscreen, retinoid, vitamin C, moisturizer. That is enough for most people.
Treatment Maintenance Schedules
Different treatments need different maintenance frequencies:
Botox / Dysport / Letybo
Frequency: Every 3-4 months
Why: Effect wears off as muscles regain function. Regular maintenance prevents lines from reforming as deeply.
Dermal Filler
Frequency: Every 6-18 months depending on area and product
Lips: 6-9 months
Cheeks: 12-18 months
Why: Filler metabolizes over time. Touch-ups before complete resolution maintain continuous results.
HIFU
Frequency: Every 12-18 months
Why: Collagen production stimulated by HIFU peaks around 3-6 months and gradually declines. Annual treatment maintains lifting effect.
Microneedling / Collagen Induction
Frequency: 2-4 times per year for maintenance
Why: Keeps collagen stimulation ongoing. Cumulative results improve over time with regular sessions.
IPL
Frequency: 1-2 times per year for maintenance
Why: Treats new sun damage before it accumulates. Maintains clear, even skin tone.
HydraFacial
Frequency: Monthly or as needed
Why: Ongoing skin clarity and hydration. Popular as regular maintenance or pre-event treatment.
Chemical Peels
Frequency: Every 4-8 weeks for light peels, less often for deeper peels
Why: Maintains exfoliation and skin turnover. Keeps skin fresh and clear.
Lifestyle Factors That Matter
Your results are affected by more than products and treatments:
Sleep: Skin repairs during sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation accelerates aging and slows healing from treatments.
Smoking: Dramatically accelerates skin aging and impairs healing. If you smoke, that is the single biggest change you can make for your skin.
Hydration: Dehydrated skin looks older. Drinking adequate water supports skin health from the inside.
Stress: Chronic stress increases cortisol, which breaks down collagen. Managing stress supports your skin (and everything else).
Diet: Antioxidant-rich foods support skin health. Excessive sugar and processed foods may accelerate aging.
These are not quick fixes, but over the long term, lifestyle factors compound with treatments and skincare to produce better or worse results.
The Case for Membership
Membership programs exist because maintenance matters and consistency is easier when it is built into your routine.
Benefits of a membership approach:
- Scheduled appointments mean you actually do maintenance instead of waiting until results fade
- Better pricing than paying per treatment
- Builds a long-term relationship with your provider who knows your skin
- Cumulative improvement rather than cycles of improvement and decline
A membership is not for everyone. But if you plan to maintain results anyway, it often makes financial and practical sense.
