How to Get Your Skin Laser-Ready (And the Four Things Not to Do Before Your Appointment)
By Jacqueline Nash
A few days ago we made the case that fall is laser season. Cooler weather, shorter days, less sun on your skin, which is exactly the window when light-based treatments are safest and work best.
So you booked your laser skin tightening, your laser sunspot removal, your laser hair removal, or your laser rosacea treatment. Good.
Here is the part nobody tells you. What you do in the four weeks before you sit in that chair matters nearly as much as the settings we use once you are in it. Not because we are strict. Because of how the technology actually works.
Why any of this matters
A laser or IPL device sends light energy into the skin. Pigment and blood vessels absorb that light and turn it into heat. That heat is what breaks up a sun spot, closes a broken capillary, or damages a hair follicle.
Here is the problem. The device cannot tell the difference between the brown spot you want gone and the tan you picked up over the weekend. It cannot tell the difference between a hair follicle and the extra pigment sitting in freshly sunburned skin. Pigment is pigment. It all absorbs.
That single fact is the reason for every rule below.
The four things not to do
1. Do not tan. That includes self-tanner.
Window: four weeks.
This is the one that gets appointments rescheduled more than all the others combined.
Real sun, a tanning bed, a spray tan, a bottle of gradual self-tanner, a tanning supplement, any of it. Tanned skin reads to the device as a target, and treating over it raises the risk of a burn, a blister, or pigment that comes back darker than it started.
And yes, a spray tan counts. The device responds to the color sitting in your skin. It does not know or care where the color came from.
If you got sun, tell us. We will move your appointment rather than run lower settings and give you a weaker result. Rescheduling costs you a few weeks. Treating over a tan can cost you months.
2. Do not stay on your retinol or your acids.
Window: seven days.
Stop retinol, tretinoin, Retin-A, adapalene, and any prescription retinoid a week out. Same for glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids, benzoyl peroxide, hydroquinone, and any scrub.
These all speed up how fast you shed the surface layer of skin. That is usually the point of them. But a thinner surface layer has less buffer between the light energy and the living tissue underneath, which raises the odds of a burn.
The thing people forget: your vitamin C serum counts. Your acne wash counts. Your "brightening" toner counts. When we ask what you are putting on your face, we need the whole list, not just the products you think of as active.
One exception worth saying out loud. Never stop a prescription on your own. Bring it up at your consult and we will work around it.
3. Do not wax, thread, pluck, or use hair removal cream.
Window: four weeks for hair removal, one week for everything else.
For laser hair removal specifically, this one is non-negotiable. The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. If you waxed or plucked, the follicle is empty. There is nothing there to target, and you paid for a session that could not do its job.
Shaving is fine. Shaving is actually preferred, and we will ask you to shave the area the morning of.
For other laser and IPL treatments, waxing, threading and depilatory creams irritate the skin surface and can leave it inflamed going into a treatment that will add heat on top.
4. Do not stack another treatment in the same area.
Window: two weeks.
No peels, no collagen induction therapy (microneedling or similar), no other laser in the same area for two weeks beforehand. Same goes for neurotoxin or filler in the treatment field.
Every one of those is doing controlled work on your skin already. Layering a second treatment on top before the first has settled does not double your results. It doubles your inflammation, and inflamed skin is the skin most likely to end up with pigment where you did not want any.
If you are on a plan with us, we sequence this for you. If you had something done somewhere else, tell us.
What to actually do instead
The list of don'ts gets the attention. This is the shorter list that does the quiet work.
Starting four weeks out
SPF 30 or higher, every day, on everything we are treating. That means hands and chest too, not just your face. Daily incidental sun through a car window adds up more than most people believe.
Starting a week out
Tell us every medication and supplement you take. Some raise sun sensitivity: doxycycline, tetracycline, Bactrim, certain diuretics, St. John's wort. We are not asking you to stop anything. We are asking so we can plan.
If you get cold sores anywhere near the treatment area, say so. We can start you on an antiviral first. This is much easier to prevent than to treat.
The day before
Skip the alcohol. It makes swelling and bruising more likely.
Drink water. Well hydrated skin tolerates heat better.
The day of
Come with clean, bare skin. No makeup, no sunscreen, no lotion, no perfume, no deodorant in the treatment area.
Shave that morning if there is hair in the area.
Point out any new or changing moles so we can work around them.
Bring a hat and sunglasses for the walk back to your car.
Two things worth knowing before you book
A photofacial treats color, not texture. IPL is excellent on brown spots, redness and broken capillaries. It is not a wrinkle treatment and it is not a tightening treatment. If lines or laxity are what actually bother you, that is a different device and a different conversation. We would rather tell you that at the consult than have you disappointed after a series that was never aimed at your concern.
Your spots will get darker before they get lighter. For two or three days after a photofacial, treated pigment often darkens and takes on a slightly gray-brown cast, then flakes off. That is the treatment working, not a bad reaction. It is also the single most common reason a first-timer calls us worried.
Questions we get all the time
I only got a little sun. Does that really count? Usually yes. We would rather look at your skin and decide together than have you guess. Come in, let us assess it, and if we need to move you back a few weeks we will book the new date while you are standing there.
Can I just stop the retinol two days before? Seven days is the ask. Retinoids keep working in the skin after you stop applying them, so two days does not give the surface layer enough time to rebuild.
I already waxed. Now what? For hair removal, wait out the four weeks. The session will not work otherwise. Shave in the meantime, as often as you want.
Does all of this apply to collagen induction therapy like microneedling too? Some of it, not all. Collagen induction treatments use different mechanisms than lasers, which is why some can be used safely on a wider range of skin tones. The retinol and stacking rules still apply. The tanning rule is less strict. Ask us about your specific plan.
How soon will I see something? Redness and broken vessels usually respond faster than deep pigment. Most plans are a series rather than a single visit, and we will tell you at the consult roughly how many sessions your concern is likely to need.
The honest first step
Nobody should be guessing at this from a blog post, including this one.
Different skin tones, different pigment problems and different medication lists change what is safe and what is smart. A brown spot that is sun damage and a brown spot that is melasma can look identical in your bathroom mirror and need completely different handling. That is a consult, under good light, with someone who will tell you the truth about what your skin needs.
Fall is the window. Come get looked at while there is still runway to do a full series before spring.
