How to Choose a Good Esthetician

By Jacqueline Nash, Medical Aesthetics Nurse, Youngstown, Ohio

You would not let just anyone cut your hair. You definitely should not let just anyone work on your skin.

The problem is that unlike a bad haircut, a bad facial or peel or extraction can leave lasting damage. Scarring. Hyperpigmentation. Broken capillaries. Infection. These are real risks when someone unqualified is working on your face.

Here is how to find someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Why It Matters

Your skin is an organ. It protects you from infection, regulates your temperature, and is the first thing people see when they look at you. It deserves qualified care.

A good esthetician can transform your skin. Clear acne. Fade dark spots. Smooth texture. Slow aging. They can recommend products that actually work for your skin type instead of whatever is trending on social media.

A bad esthetician can cause damage that takes months or years to repair. I have seen clients come in with burns from improperly applied peels, scarring from aggressive extractions, and infections from unclean tools. These were all avoidable with proper training and protocols.

Credentials to Look For

State licensure. In Ohio, estheticians must be licensed by the State Board of Cosmetology. This requires completing an approved training program and passing an exam. You can verify a license at the Ohio eLicense portal. If they are not licensed, walk away.

Continuing education. Skincare evolves. Ingredients, techniques, and technology change. A good esthetician stays current through continuing education. Ask what courses or certifications they have completed recently.

Experience with your concerns. Someone who specializes in acne may not be the best choice for anti-aging. Ask about their experience with your specific skin concerns.

Understanding Scope of Practice

This is important: estheticians have a defined scope of practice. They are trained and licensed to perform facials, extractions, superficial exfoliation, masks, and basic skincare treatments. They are not licensed to perform medical procedures.

What estheticians CAN do:

  • Facials and skin analysis
  • Manual extractions
  • Superficial chemical peels (low percentage, non-medical grade)
  • Dermaplaning
  • Microdermabrasion
  • LED light therapy
  • Waxing and hair removal (non-laser)
  • Application of skincare products

What requires additional licensure or medical oversight:

  • Microneedling (creates controlled injury, requires medical supervision in most states)
  • Laser treatments (hair removal, skin resurfacing, IPL)
  • Medium and deep chemical peels
  • Injectable treatments (Botox, fillers)
  • Prescription-strength skincare

If someone is offering microneedling, laser treatments, or other advanced procedures, ask about their credentials. These should be performed by or under the direct supervision of a licensed medical professional such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or registered nurse with appropriate training.

A regular esthetician performing microneedling in a salon without medical oversight is operating outside their scope. This is not just a legal issue. It is a safety issue. These treatments carry real risks that require medical training to manage.

Medical spa vs regular spa. If you want treatments beyond basic facials, like chemical peels, microneedling, or laser, look for a medical spa. Medical spas operate under physician oversight and employ licensed medical professionals who can legally and safely perform advanced treatments. Regular spas are limited in what they can legally offer.

Red Flags to Avoid

No consultation. If they want to start treating you without asking questions about your skin, health history, medications, and goals, that is a problem. Good treatment requires understanding what you are working with.

Pushy product sales. Recommending products is normal. Pressuring you to buy a bunch of expensive products on your first visit is not. A professional prioritizes your skin over commissions.

Promising miracles. Anyone who promises to erase your wrinkles, clear your acne overnight, or transform your skin in one session is either lying or dangerously aggressive. Real results take time. Anyone promising otherwise does not understand skin.

Unclean environment. Look around. Are surfaces clean? Are tools sanitized? Are they wearing gloves? Infection control is not optional. If the space feels dirty, leave.

Dismissing your concerns. If you mention sensitivity, allergies, or past reactions and they brush you off, find someone else. Your history matters.

No license displayed. In Ohio, licenses should be displayed. If you do not see one and they cannot show you proof, that is a major red flag.

Questions to Ask

Before booking or during your consultation, ask:

  • How long have you been practicing?
  • What is your training background?
  • Do you have experience with my specific concern (acne, aging, pigmentation, etc.)?
  • What products and equipment do you use?
  • What should I expect during and after this treatment?
  • What are the risks?
  • How do you sanitize your tools?

A good esthetician will answer these questions easily and thoroughly. If they get defensive or vague, that tells you something.

The Consultation Tells You Everything

The best way to evaluate an esthetician is to book a consultation before committing to treatment.

During a good consultation, they should:

  • Look at your skin closely, possibly with magnification or a skin analysis tool
  • Ask about your current routine, products you use, and any reactions you have had
  • Ask about medications, health conditions, and allergies
  • Ask what bothers you about your skin and what your goals are
  • Explain what they see and what they recommend
  • Tell you realistically what results to expect and how long it will take
  • Discuss risks and contraindications

If they want to jump straight to treatment without doing any of this, they are not prioritizing your safety or results.
