How Often Should You Get a Facial?
By Jacqueline Nash, Medical Aesthetics Nurse, Youngstown, Ohio
Some people come in every two weeks. Some come once a year. Neither is necessarily wrong, but one is probably not optimal for their skin.
The right frequency depends on what your skin needs, what you are trying to achieve, and what type of facial you are getting.
The Short Answer
For most people, every 4-6 weeks is the sweet spot for maintenance facials. This aligns with your skin's natural renewal cycle and gives enough time between treatments for your skin to recover and benefit.
But that is a starting point, not a rule. Your skin may need more or less depending on its condition and your goals.
Why 4-6 Weeks Works
Your skin has a natural cell turnover cycle. New cells form at the base of the epidermis, migrate to the surface over time, and eventually shed. In your 20s, this cycle takes about 28 days. As you age, it slows down, taking 45-60 days or longer by your 50s and beyond.
Facials help with this process. They remove dead cells that have accumulated on the surface, clear out pores, and stimulate circulation. Doing this in rhythm with your skin's natural cycle makes sense.
Come in too often and you risk over-exfoliating. Wait too long and buildup accumulates, pores clog, and your skin looks dull.
Frequency by Skin Type
Oily or acne-prone skin. Every 3-4 weeks may be beneficial, especially if you need regular extractions. Oily skin accumulates sebum and dead cells faster, leading to clogged pores. More frequent facials can help keep things clear.
Normal or combination skin. Every 4-6 weeks is usually ideal. This maintains skin health without overdoing it.
Dry or sensitive skin. Every 5-6 weeks or even longer. Sensitive skin needs more recovery time between treatments. Over-treating can damage an already fragile barrier.
Mature skin. Every 4-6 weeks can help with cell turnover that has slowed with age. Regular facials can improve the dull, buildup-prone look that comes with slower natural exfoliation.
Frequency by Concern
Acne. During active breakouts, every 2-4 weeks for extractions and treatment. This is temporary. Once acne is controlled, drop to every 4-6 weeks for maintenance. Do not stay on an aggressive schedule forever.
Hyperpigmentation. Consistent treatment every 4-6 weeks helps with products and light exfoliation that address dark spots. Too much exfoliation can worsen pigmentation, so do not overdo it.
Anti-aging. Every 4-6 weeks for maintenance facials. If you are doing more aggressive treatments like chemical peels or microneedling, those are spaced further apart and require separate scheduling.
General maintenance. Every 4-6 weeks keeps skin healthy, prevents buildup, and catches small issues before they become big ones.
Special events. If you have a wedding, reunion, or important event, schedule a facial 1-2 weeks before. Not the day before. You want time for any redness or reactions to resolve and for your skin to show the full glow.
Can You Overdo It?
Yes. More is not always better.
Getting facials too frequently can:
- Damage your skin barrier
- Cause chronic irritation and sensitivity
- Trigger breakouts
- Lead to over-exfoliated, raw-looking skin
- Make your skin dependent on external exfoliation
Your skin needs time to recover between treatments. Even gentle facials create some degree of exfoliation and stimulation. Piling treatments on top of each other without recovery time is counterproductive.
If someone is telling you to come in every week for regular facials, question it. That frequency is rarely necessary and often harmful.
It Depends on the Facial
Not all facials are equal. The type of facial affects how often you should get it.
Gentle hydrating facials. These can be done more frequently, even every 2-3 weeks, because they are not aggressive. They add moisture without disrupting the barrier.
Exfoliating facials. Every 4-6 weeks maximum. These remove dead cells and need recovery time.
HydraFacials. Every 4-6 weeks for most people. They cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate without being too aggressive.
Chemical peels. Depends on the depth. Light peels might be done every 2-4 weeks in a series. Medium peels need 4-6 weeks between sessions. Deep peels are done once and require significant recovery.
Microneedling. Every 4-6 weeks during a treatment series. This is a medical treatment, not a facial, but people often ask about frequency.
