You've noticed your jawline isn't as defined as it used to be. Maybe your neck looks a little looser, or those jowls are starting to form along your lower face. You're not ready for surgery ... but you want something that actually works.
That's exactly what HIFU was designed for.
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is the only non-invasive treatment that can reach the deep foundational layers of your skin ... the same layers a surgeon would tighten during a facelift. Here's what you need to know.
What Is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It uses focused ultrasound energy to heat specific layers of tissue beneath the skin surface, triggering a wound-healing response that produces new collagen.
Unlike lasers (which treat the skin's surface) or radiofrequency (which heats more diffusely), HIFU creates precise points of thermal coagulation at targeted depths. Think of it like using a magnifying glass to focus sunlight ... except the energy is ultrasound, and it's focused deep under your skin.
How HIFU Actually Works
Your skin has multiple layers. The deepest structural layer ... the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) ... is what surgeons tighten during a facelift. Until HIFU, there was no way to reach this layer without cutting.
HIFU treatment targets three depths:
- 4.5mm: Reaches the SMAS layer for deep lifting
- 3.0mm: Targets the dermis for skin tightening
- 1.5mm: Addresses superficial fine lines
At each depth, the ultrasound energy creates tiny points of thermal injury (around 60-70°C). Your body responds by producing new collagen to repair these areas. Over 2-3 months, this new collagen contracts and tightens, lifting the tissue.
What HIFU Treats on the Face and Neck
Jowls and jawline: This is HIFU's sweet spot. Early to moderate jowling responds beautifully to HIFU because we can target the exact layers where laxity is occurring.
Neck laxity: The dreaded "turkey neck" ... loose skin under the chin and along the neck ... can be significantly improved with HIFU.
Brow lifting: Subtle lifting of the brow area can open up the eyes without surgery.
Nasolabial folds: The lines running from nose to mouth soften as surrounding tissue lifts.
Overall skin tightening: The treatment improves overall skin firmness and texture.
HIFU vs. Surgical Facelift
Let's be honest about what HIFU can and can't do:
HIFU is ideal for:
- Mild to moderate sagging
- People in their 40s-60s with early signs of laxity
- Those who want improvement without surgery
- Maintenance after surgical procedures
- People who can't take time off for surgical recovery
Surgery may be better for:
- Severe sagging with significant excess skin
- Advanced jowling
- Those wanting more dramatic results
- Situations where non-surgical options haven't been enough
I always tell clients: HIFU can turn back the clock 2-5 years. Surgery can turn it back 10+. Know what you're working with before you decide.
What to Expect During Treatment
A full face and neck HIFU treatment takes about 60-90 minutes. Here's the process:
Before: We cleanse your skin and apply ultrasound gel. No numbing cream is typically needed, though we can use one for sensitive areas.
During: You'll feel the ultrasound energy as tiny bursts of heat deep in your skin. Most people describe it as tolerable but not comfortable ... like brief pinches or zaps. The jawline and forehead tend to be more sensitive than the cheeks.
After: You may have mild redness or swelling for a few hours. Most people return to normal activities immediately. No downtime required.
Results Timeline
HIFU results aren't instant because you're waiting for your body to build new collagen:
Immediately: Some clients see a subtle lift right away from tissue contraction
1-3 months: Results gradually improve as collagen production ramps up
3-6 months: Full results visible ... this is when you'll see the real difference
12-18 months: Results typically last this long before maintenance is recommended
Most people do one treatment per year to maintain results. Some may benefit from a second treatment 3-6 months after the first for enhanced results.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Ideal candidates:
- Age 35-65 with mild to moderate skin laxity
- Good skin elasticity (still some "bounce")
- Realistic expectations about non-surgical results
- Healthy overall
Not ideal candidates:
- Severe sagging requiring surgery
- Very thin skin with little collagen reserve
- Active skin infections or lesions in treatment area
- Metal implants in the treatment area
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
