Chemical peels have been used for skin rejuvenation for decades ... and for good reason. They work. When done correctly, peels can address everything from dull skin to deep wrinkles, acne scars to hyperpigmentation.
But not all peels are created equal. Here's your complete guide to understanding chemical peels and choosing the right one.
What Chemical Peels Actually Do
A chemical peel applies an acid solution to the skin that causes controlled damage to the outer layers. This triggers your skin to shed the damaged cells and regenerate with new, healthier tissue.
The result depends on peel depth:
- Light peels: Remove the outermost layer (stratum corneum) for immediate brightness
- Medium peels: Penetrate through the epidermis for texture and pigment improvement
- Deep peels: Reach into the dermis for significant wrinkle and scar correction
Deeper peels = more dramatic results, but also more downtime and risk.
Light Peels (Superficial)
Light peels are the "lunchtime peel" ... minimal downtime, gentle results, perfect for maintenance.
Common acids used:
- Glycolic acid: Derived from sugar cane, excellent for brightening and fine lines
- Lactic acid: Gentler, also hydrating, good for sensitive skin
- Salicylic acid: Oil-soluble, penetrates pores, ideal for acne
- Mandelic acid: Gentle, good for darker skin tones
- Enzyme peels: Use fruit enzymes instead of acids, very gentle
What light peels treat:
- Dullness and uneven tone
- Mild texture issues
- Surface congestion
- Maintenance between stronger treatments
Downtime: Minimal. Slight tightness, possible light flaking for 1-3 days. Most people can wear makeup the next day.
Sessions needed: Series of 4-6 peels, spaced 2-4 weeks apart, for cumulative improvement.
Medium Peels
Medium peels penetrate deeper for more significant correction. They're the workhorse of professional peeling.
Common acids used:
- TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid): The gold standard for medium peels, 15-35% concentration
- Jessner's Solution: Combination of salicylic, lactic, and resorcinol
- Combination peels: Layering multiple acids for customized depth
What medium peels treat:
- Sun damage and age spots
- Moderate wrinkles and fine lines
- Acne scars (mild to moderate)
- Melasma and hyperpigmentation
- Overall texture improvement
Downtime: 5-7 days of visible peeling. Skin appears brown/leathery, then sheds in sheets. You'll want to stay home during peak peeling.
Sessions needed: 1-3 sessions depending on concern, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
Deep Peels
Deep peels are serious interventions with dramatic results ... and significant recovery.
Common acids used:
- Phenol: The deepest peel available, significant wrinkle reduction
- High-strength TCA (35-50%): Deep penetration with controlled depth
What deep peels treat:
- Deep wrinkles
- Severe sun damage
- Precancerous growths
- Significant scarring
Downtime: 7-14 days of significant peeling, redness, and healing. Full recovery of normal color can take months. May require sedation during treatment.
Sessions needed: Usually one treatment is sufficient due to the depth of correction.
Note: Deep phenol peels require careful cardiac monitoring and are rarely done outside of physician's offices.
Which Peel Is Right for You?
| Concern | Best Peel |
|---|---|
| Dullness, maintenance | Light (glycolic, lactic) |
| Acne, oily skin | Light-Medium (salicylic, Jessner) |
| Sun damage, age spots | Medium (TCA 15-25%) |
| Fine lines, texture | Medium (TCA, combination) |
| Melasma | Light-Medium (with caution) |
| Acne scars | Medium-Deep (TCA 25-35%) |
| Deep wrinkles | Deep (phenol, high TCA) |
The Peeling Process
During treatment: You'll feel tingling, warmth, and possibly stinging as the acid works. Light peels are mildly uncomfortable. Medium peels can be quite intense. Deep peels typically require pain management.
Days 1-3: Skin feels tight, may look darker or more bronzed than normal. This is the acid working.
Days 3-7 (medium peels): Visible peeling begins. The skin sheds in sheets or flakes. Do NOT pick or pull ... let it release naturally.
Days 7-14: Peeling completes. New skin underneath is pink and fresh. Very sensitive to sun.
Week 2-4: Skin normalizes. Full results visible as any residual pinkness fades.
Chemical Peel Aftercare
Essential rules:
- NO picking: Pulling peeling skin causes scarring
- Gentle cleanser only: No actives, no scrubs, no exfoliants
- Heavy moisturizer: Aquaphor, Vaseline, or your provider's recommendation
- SPF 30+ mandatory: New skin is extremely photosensitive
- No makeup until peeling stops (for medium/deep peels)
- No sweating: Avoid exercise and saunas during peeling phase
