Why I Ask About Your Sleep Before Your Treatment

By Jacqueline Nash, RN

Draft for: October 2026

Here's a conversation I have at least once a week:

"I'm doing everything right — the skincare, the treatments, drinking water — but I still look tired."

And then I ask: "How's your sleep?"

Silence. Or a nervous laugh. Or "I mean… I get like five hours?"

There it is.

The Elephant in the Room

Nobody wants to talk about sleep. It's boring. It's not a quick fix. You can't buy it in a bottle or schedule it as an appointment.

But here's what I've learned after years of doing this work: sleep is the difference between okay results and incredible results.

I can give you the best laser treatment, the most precise injections, the perfect skincare protocol — and if you're running on five hours a night, you're leaving money on the table.

What Sleep Actually Does for Your Skin

When you sleep — really sleep, the deep kind — your body goes into repair mode. This isn't woo-woo wellness talk. It's biology.

Collagen production peaks at night. That protein everyone's chasing? Your body makes it while you're unconscious. Skimp on sleep, skimp on collagen.

Human growth hormone releases during deep sleep. This is your body's repair crew. It's what helps your skin bounce back after treatments, heal micro-injuries, and stay resilient.

Inflammation calms down. Chronic sleep deprivation keeps your body in a low-grade inflammatory state. Inflammation ages you. It also makes treatments less effective and recovery slower.

Cortisol drops. When you don't sleep, cortisol stays elevated. High cortisol breaks down collagen and makes your skin thinner over time. It's the opposite of everything we're trying to do.

Dark Circles: The Obvious One

Let's talk about under-eye circles for a second, because this is where sleep deprivation shows up first.

When you're tired, blood vessels dilate. The skin under your eyes is thin — thinner than almost anywhere else on your body. So those dilated vessels show through as dark shadows.

Add to that the fluid retention that comes with poor sleep (hello, puffy eyes), and you've got that "I haven't slept in three days" look even if you technically slept… just not well.

I can treat dark circles. We have options. But if you're chronically exhausted, we're fighting an uphill battle.

Why This Matters for Your Treatments

When you come in for a treatment — whether it's laser, microneedling, a peel, whatever — you're creating controlled damage. That's how these treatments work. We're triggering your body's healing response.

But here's the thing: your body has to actually heal.

If you're sleep-deprived:

  • Healing takes longer
  • Results are less dramatic
  • You're more prone to complications
  • Inflammation hangs around longer than it should

I've seen two clients get the same exact treatment, same skin type, same aftercare — and one gets significantly better results. The difference? One sleeps seven hours a night. The other survives on coffee and four hours.

I'm Not Here to Lecture You

Look, I get it. Life is busy. Kids, work, stress, scrolling until 1 AM because it's the only "me time" you get. I'm not here to shame anyone.

But I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't mention it.

If you're investing in your skin — and these treatments are an investment — you deserve to get the most out of that investment. Sleep is free. It's the one thing that amplifies everything else we're doing.

What "Good Sleep" Actually Looks Like

You don't need to become a sleep influencer. But here's what helps:

  • 7-8 hours minimum. Not 6. Not "I function fine on 5." Seven to eight.
  • Consistent bedtime. Your body likes routine. Even on weekends.
  • Dark room, cool temperature. Blackout curtains are worth it.
  • No screens an hour before bed. I know. I hate it too. But the blue light really does mess with your melatonin.

The Bottom Line

I want your results to be amazing. I want you to look in the mirror and feel like your investment was worth it.

Sleep won't fix everything. But it's the foundation that makes everything else work better.

So the next time I ask about your sleep, know that I'm not making small talk. I'm trying to help you get the results you're paying for.
